BAMSMWM is unlikely to trend on TikTok, but I hope you will indulge me this one time. If you're reading this, chances are this is not your first rodeo. You have camped out online for the monthly booking release of Joy Restaurant, queued for a pastry at Lune or made plans weeks in advance for a table at Agnes. However, as you enter the echelons of 'the best restaurants in the world', competition for a seat at the table enters a new level.
I had my sights set on that OAD #1 Restaurant in Europe. After numerous attempts and failures to secure a table in 2022, I was determined to score the impossible reservation. The timing, however, was less than ideal. A perfect storm of Nordic Michelin announcements and OAD awards in the week of a reservation launch meant that there was even more competition than usual.
“The experience lasts for 4–6 hours, and the only prerequisites are curiosity and presence of mind.”
It may seem weird to book a meal months in advance. It may seem even stranger to wake up in the middle of the night and compete with tens of thousands of people for the privilege.
Since I decided to write this post, I have been trying to describe why a meal would warrant such effort. Is it the quality of the ingredients, the size of the wine list, or the celebrity of the head chef perhaps? If I told you that the meal comprised of 50 courses, involved numerous 'acts', with a main dining room in a planetarium designed to immerse your senses, would that convince you? For me, I guess it is all and yet none of those things. My commitment to collecting experiences over objects drives my ambition. Filling my bucket list with once-in-a-lifetime meals at every chance that I get. To do that, I first have to make a reservation.
Devices were charged, Tock account updated, card details entered, target dates selected, back up dates selected; I left nothing to chance.
12:40AM - Alarm number 3 goes off as I wake from a strategic nap.
12:57AM - With laptop charged and Tock account set up, it was time for a practice run.
12:59:58AM - Refresh...
12:59:59AM - Refresh...
01:00:01AM - The process was committed to muscle memory by now. Three mouse clicks in and dates were already starting to book out.
01:00:03AM - With the speed of any seasoned online shopper (ie. my wife), I made it to the target date (option one out of a pre-determined list of four).
01:00:04AM - Reservation confirmed.
01:00:06AM - Booked out.
Needless to say, it was difficult to return to sleep after the adrenaline rush of securing a reservation. For now, I'll let the anticipation linger. And, when the day arrives, I invite you to join me through the lens of my camera. I suspect it will be a feast for the eyes just as much as the palate.
